101 days left

101days

last week i came upon a decision. after months of deliberation, i've decided leave Chicago and move back to Montana.

Billings, Montana matter of factly... Population: approx, 108,000. Largest town in Montana. Known as the Magic City.

I've decided to set the guidelines of this move to happen no later Halloween 2007. Which I think as of today is 101 days. (that is if i counted correctly).

so now comes the difficult part...

implementation of my plan. If I can't transfer with the company I currently work for, then I'm pretty much hosed.. Unless I want to go into another line of work. Montana is great, but the IT job market (especially for RPGLE programmers for the AS400) is pretty thin.

Task:
  • Moving to Billings

Parameters of task:
  • job
  • transportation
  • housing
  • financing
  • timelines of implementation

The first issue to be tackled is the Job Task.

I've ran preliminary analysis to determine if I could keep my current job. So far the analysis is inconclusive. More data is needed.

The first (and as far as I'm concerned) most critical task occurs this Wednesday. As I am breaking the news to my boss of my intentions and explain my situation and game plan. The objectives of this task are:
  1. Inform my boss of my intentions to move to Billings.
  2. Assure management that I am still committed to my department and the company.
  3. Explain the reason behind my decision
  4. Convey that I am an integral cog of our corporate wheel.
  5. Lay out my master plan to work remotely from one of our trucking terminals. (so in a sense, i would give up the cozy high rise office environment to a dirty, smelly trucking terminal). Explain how this would benefit all parties and turn any cons brought up into positives or workarounds.
So for the next 2 days, I am working out my master plan and how to audibly convey and persuade my audience (my manager and his boss). I wish I would have paid more attention in the finer points of effective persuasive public speaking...

It's never boring in the land of Goatopolis... more to come soon.
